[Interview] Level Designer - Yoo Soo-yeon

1. Please introduce yourself briefly.
Hello, I’m Yoo Soo-yeon, a level designer who is developing Bubble genre games in Puzzle1studio Team S2.

2. What do you do and what do you do in your team?
Team S2 is responsible for updating Bubble Pop and Bubble Pop Origin, which are currently being published by BitMango

We are aiming to develop another Bubble production this year.
As a level designer, I am in charge of level-related tasks such as level production, data-based level modification, A/B test design and performance.

3. I’m curious about the team’s daily schedule!
With the Daily Scrum, our team will start their day by sharing today’s tasks, briefly discussing and helping areas.
Also, we check user reviews every day and share them one by one. You can know directly what users are satisfied with and what they are uncomfortable with

It is very helpful for us to set the direction of the update. I naturally gain strength when I see reviews praising the game.
After that, we focus on our work and talk for a while while going to buy coffee together when the company cafe opens. ☕
It’s a short time, but it’s nice to talk in a casual atmosphere, so I can comfortably talk about things that I was stuck in while working, worries, and ideas that came to mind.

4. What is the role and strength of Level Designer in game development?
Level Designer plays a role in creating high-quality levels and making use of the unique fun of the genre.
The advantage of Team S2 is that it has accumulated its own know-how in the Bubble genre as it has been steadily developed Bubble games. All of our team members value the user experience

I want to brag that we are giving feedback to each other and reflecting it in our work.

5. When did you feel the most rewarding while working?
Of course, I am happy when sales go up, but personally, when there is a saying that the level is fun or challenging in the user review,

I’m thrilled because I think the level of fun has been created as I intended.

6. What are your business challenges?
Puzzle1studio has weekly and game update routines, so it’s important not to be pushed back.
At the beginning of the job, when I was in charge of several tasks at the same time, there were situations where I was concentrating on one task and my schedule to do other tasks decreased.
Through 1O1 with my manager, I was able to help with setting priorities more carefully and manage my schedule better than before. 🙂

7. What are you doing to strengthen your job competency?
I’m mainly studying through an in-house study. Since we share opinions together, it’s good to learn from various perspectives with ideas that you can’t think of when you study alone.
Also, I think it’s good to be responsible for self-development because it’s an activity together.
I’m currently participating in two studies. Bubble genre planners have been participating in a study since last year to study game planning materials together regardless of genre.
Recently, we opened a study with planners with a similar time of joining the company with the aim of “Let’s find a site that is useful for work and can be shared greatly in-house!”
I often use the game/level designer COP curriculum as a study material.
It is very useful because it has accumulated materials and in-house know-how that directly help you plan the puzzle.
COP also allows you to ask questions or receive feedback in real time, and interacting with the team beyond the title is a great help in strengthening your capabilities.

8. Any advice for Level Designer applicants?
Since it has a distinctive tendency from domestic and core game users, try various popular puzzle games with high global sales rankings

It would be good if you get used to the elements that major users of the global puzzle game that Puzzle1studio aims for.
In addition to analyzing game elements, it would be good to pay attention to the play that users experience created by those elements.

If you think about how a level designer creates such an experience, it will be helpful for your future work.

9. Who would you like to work with if a new team member came in?
A person who makes many comments to improve the user experience.

I don’t think, “I’m a level designer, so if I make a good level, it’s over.” I hope that someone who can give an opinion to make our game better.
They are also people who share difficulties quickly and find solutions together. I think a faster solution will come out if you share the difficulties and ask questions rather than thinking about it alone.

10. Why did you choose a game company and why did you choose Beat Mango among various game companies?
I’ve made a simple game myself, and it was quite rewarding that other people played the game I made and told me it was fun.

So I chose a game company because I thought that if I work for a game company, I could play the contents that I made to many people.
The games I usually enjoyed were mainly global or North American target casual games, and I became interested in BitMango, which I thought was an overseas game company, after learning that it was a domestic company.

11. If you have any special know-how to join BitMango/PuzzleOne, please share it!
I think the timing was good that I applied without thinking about it.

While preparing for the job, it was very helpful to play and analyze the games in service at Puzzle1studio and write a reverse plan.

12. What do you want to achieve in BItMango?
It’s the world’s best Bubble game where play is really fun 😄

[Interview] Game Designer - Lee Hyung Jun

1. Please introduce yourself briefly.
Hello, I’m Lee Hyung Jun, the Game Designer of Puzzle1studio Team Q.

2. What do you do and what do you do in your team?

Team Q aims to create Puzzle1studio’s own original game, especially the Blast genre, which features fast production and fun of popping items at once

We are also conducting various experiments such as incorporating meta-content in .
As a Game Designer, I am planning various contents based on global trends and user needs.
We are constantly thinking about the profitability of the app and conducting various tests accordingly.

3. I’m curious about your daily routine!
On Monday, we share what we’re going to do this week with Weekly Sprint, and on Friday, we’re adjusting the amount of work by scheduling next week.
For example, when a job interview request comes in like this time, the state adjusts the amount of work a little.
For the rest of the week, Daily Sprint will share what you need to do or what you need to do today.

After that, the work is carried out according to the priority. If you need to deliver what you’ve planned, you can communicate through conversation
We are free to give feedback from time to time, but if you want more in-depth feedback, we will set up a separate meeting to proceed.

In addition, we collaborate with various teams in each game, so we do Sprint every two weeks to share the progress of each team and exchange questions and feedback.

4. What is Game Designer’s role and strength in game development?
Game Designer is responsible for various tasks such as reference research, UX/UI planning, system planning, concept planning, BM planning, and various tests and data analysis.
Based on these plans, team members work, and I think Game Designer plays a role in laying the foundation for game development, just as the beginning is important for everything.

5. When did you feel the most rewarding while working?
Recently, we developed a game that combines meta elements, and although the development process was difficult, we gave positive reviews to users such as the story is fun and the decorative elements are pretty

I felt very rewarded when I received it. In addition, we conducted various tests during the update process, and I felt it was worthwhile to get meaningful data in terms of user data.

6. What are your business challenges?
Among the numerous puzzle games in the global puzzle game market, I am always worried about creating a unique and fun game that will captivate users.
While referring to various references, I think I always think about where to differentiate myself as a priority.

7. What are you doing to strengthen your job competency?
First of all, I am trying to learn the trend of the market by playing games that are doing well in the global market.
Also, I tend to get knowledge by looking for books and materials related to planning, and in the case of Puzzle1studio, sharing is active, so through planning job group meetings and COP once a week,

We are strengthening our job competencies by sharing our knowledge with each other’s knowledge.

8. Any advice for Game Designer applicants?
I think we should make a game that users want, not a game that I want to make.
I think it will be helpful to think deeply about how to give fun to users from various perspectives such as planning and art.

9. Who would you like to work with if a new team member came in?
I want to work with someone who can communicate flexibly based on interest and passion for puzzle game development, greed and responsibility for projects.

10. Why did you choose a game company and why did you choose Puzzle1studio among various game companies?
I was interested in mobile puzzle games.

Since mobile puzzle games have a larger global market than in Korea, I wanted to experience game development in a company targeting global users.
I thought I could have such an experience at Puzzle1studio, and I chose it because I wanted to learn a lot of know-how about puzzle games in the global market.
I’m in my fifth year here. The ability to analyze games based on data was greatly enhanced by allowing all employees to check the indicators of all games.
After the UX experiment results or development has been completed, or after the global launch, we will proceed with the post-motem of the game that has been transferred to live operation

I felt that we were growing together in a culture that shares insights throughout the company.

11. If you have any special know-how to join BitMango/PuzzleOne, please share it!
Before I joined the company, I played various puzzle games, including the games in Puzzle1studio, and rather than just ending with “fun,” I thought it would be interesting to see which part of the game was interesting

I was going to analyze if you felt it. Based on this, I think it appealed well that we can make a good plan that reflects the needs of the users.

12. I wonder what you want to achieve in Puzzle1studio in the future!
The goal is to create a unique game unique to Puzzle1studio, which leads the global puzzle game market.

[Interview] Artist - Park Soyeon

1. Please introduce yourself briefly.
Hello I’m Park Soyeon, in charge of Brick genre game art in Puzzle1studio Team S1.

2. What do you do and what do you do in your team?
Team S1 is developing a Brick genre game that combines various challenges and casualness into classical games.
We are running a total of two titles live, with in-app sales growing steadily, and I am producing all the art resources that go into it.

*All art resources: objects, UI, characters, backgrounds, images for release, etc

3. I’m curious about the team’s daily schedule!
We share work with team members through Daily Scrum every day. We have a simple time to recognize what issues are there and what work we do with each other.

After that, we check user reviews and share memorable reviews to S team Slack channel. There are times when I’m happy to see positive reviews, and if there are any complaints or feedback reviews,

You want to reflect it in the update. Every Friday, we share the results of the game update through Weekly Scrum. The team will discuss and decide on the task for next week’s

Write it in the backlog and record it. We freely carry out our work during working hours and communicate with each other through face-to-face or team slacks.

4. What is the role and strength of an artist in game development?
Artist’s role is to support game development with quality resources. Once you’ve set the direction/concept with your team, you’ll analyze the reference accordingly, and you’ll find fun elements, user base,

Understand the age group, concept, and UI/UX to derive new art results. Also, you need to have a good understanding of the overall flow of the game through reference play experience

I think studying basic knowledge of other jobs, communicating and collaborating is also a big part of the role.
The company is basically developing data-based games, so artists analyze other games through App Annie.
I think the strength of in-house artists is the belief that they accumulate data through the draft a/b test and constantly improve through feedback.

Artist not only creates resources, but also analyzes game data, so based on the data, we can find out what users want and let users enjoy the game. I think the role of an artist is to express the environment artistically. Puzzle1studio shares and gives feedback freely between teams and the same job. It helps to improve the completeness of the work piece.

5. When did you feel the most rewarding while working?
The Bubble Shooter game called “Break the Brick” was my first time making various drafts and producing all the art resources by myself

I developed it. Soft launch in one country and global launch is possible, so people from all over the world can play, and there are various content resources every week

What we were able to produce, what we were able to share responses and results with the updates, and when we saw the compliments in the reviews, it was most rewarding and motivated.

In addition, when I make the results based on the plan, the team members are satisfied and I feel rewarded when I draw a good response from the users with resources that match the direction the team members thought.

Since we’re doing live work, the updates that I and my team members worked hard on will lead to a good response from the users

It’s most rewarding when it’s seen as a place data figure. I think the users tell me that the part where I thought about whether this would be right or not was a good way in the end.

6. What are your business challenges?
Currently, 2 people (UI, won) + a will be used according to the game specification, but before, all resources have to be worked alone, so there is no time to spare and various projects and tasks.

There was a pain that I had to do at the same time. However, if you understand the priority of the work and expect that the work will be prolonged, discuss with the manager and reschedule it

We were able to make adjustments or ask if we could extend the period and proceed as smoothly as possible.

7. What are you doing to strengthen your job competency?
In order to strengthen our job competency, we are trying to strengthen our capabilities by simulating top-grossing game play scenes, taking Coloso/101 lectures, studying new tools, and books.
In the company, Art Director knows how to handle Unity, so he’s participating in Unity study and working with 6-7 people

If there is, we are learning by helping each other. If there is a good part of the course/recommended book, we also share the results and feedback on the course with other artists.

8. What advice would you give to the artist volunteers?
If you’re interested in North American art and puzzle genre games, it’s very helpful when you work.

I think it would be good to see a lot of references and see what elements well-developed games have in common, and to solve those elements in your own art style and expression method.
If you have done the work as a primary, I hope you continue to study and improve the work with an attitude that constantly doubts whether this expression is intuitive or whether the general user will distinguish and understand it well.

9. Who would you like to work with if a new team member came in?
I think teamwork is important because I work as a team, so I hope I can collaborate with someone who permeates the team well.
It would be nice to learn from each other and have a synergy effect by being a positive stimulus with an attitude of keeping the work process so that we can be considerate of each other and collaborate smoothly.
I think it would be good to collaborate if you can actively present your own opinion and accept it, not just no, even if it is the opposite of others’ opinions.

10. Why did you choose a game company and why did you choose Puzzle1studio among various game companies?
When I joined the company, I was a member of Bitmango Publishing Team. I worked to produce creative images and videos to make the game stand out. I was able to work with Photoshop and Adobe tools, and it was a job where there was no fixed framework for production and there was no style that I had to follow.

I chose this company because it is interesting that it only sticks to the puzzle genre. We retouch our images, create new resources, and play a lot of games. As I communicated with the development team and encountered puzzle games more and more, I naturally became very curious about making game resources and wanted to make them myself.

After a year and a half to two years, I had the opportunity to participate in game development, so I turned into an artist and have been in charge of production until now, and it’s still fun and I think I have a lot to learn.

Besides the business aspect, I have been working for Puzzle1studio for more than 6 years because I think Work and Life Balance is a good company. The part where commuting is 8 to 5 is a bit. It may be hard, but I personally liked it more because I could have a personal time after work.
